Mark Free was not a happy man.  His plans to become an astronaut had just not worked out.  It didn't really matter.  So few got to go these days. 

The Russians had two space stations and allowed a few foreigners to ride along.  There was a joint Russian-Japanese base on the moon.  The only thing that slowed the Russians down was the Mars disaster. 

The Russian lander had crashed and one of the cosmonauts left on board suicided.  His girlfriend was on the lander.  The other went insane, alone on the long trip home.  He never made it.

Mark "acquired" one of the spacecraft the government had confiscated after private spaceflight was outlawed.  His people had prepared the craft for flight, and with the government hot on his trail, he launches on a one way trip to Mars.

 The Russians plow ahead with another mission to Mars and plan to rescue the stranded American.  However, Mark has no desire to be rescued and no intent of being taken alive.
